Eagle Valley Squadron Open House
On Saturday, February 13th the Eagle Valley Squadron held an open
house at our maintenance hangar at the Red Wing Regional Airport.
The purpose of the open house was to share our mission and vision
with key representatives of other local organizations. Our
featured speaker Lt.(jg) M.A. “Spook” Johns USNR was a Douglas
Skyraider pilot assigned to ATTACK Squadron 145 (VA-145) from
January 1963 to April 1966. Spook is portrayed in the 2006
Film “Rescue Dawn,” that depicts the shooting down of USN pilot
Dieter Dengler, his capture by communist Laotians, torture, and
eventual escape from a POW camp in Vietnam.
We also displayed the two military vehicles that we are presently
restoring (a WWII and a Vietnam era jeep). We reviewed our
initial design and plans for the museum and other activities and
concluded the evening at 6:30 with a viewing of Rescue Dawn.
Jeeps!
Eagle Valley Squadron is in the process of restoring
two vehicles, a WWII Willys MB and a 1962 Ford Mutt. The
Willys’ components were stripped down and the vehicle is being
reassembled. We hope to have them done so we can paint them
this spring.
